What Is OMT?
Osteopathic Treatment, or Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is a hands on treatment taught to Osteopathic Physicians for over one hundred and fifty years. Practitioners will realign your body with their hands to relieve pain and promote your inherent ability to heal. At its core, OMT is a manual treatment aimed at aligning the body and removing areas of restriction. The purpose is to promote the body’s inherent ability to function and heal. The practice was developed in the 1850s by a physician named Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, and has evolved over the following century and a half. In the practice of OMT an Osteopathic Physician uses visual cues and touch to diagnose the body with “somatic dysfunction,” which are areas of the body that have asymmetry, restricted motion, tension or pain. The physician then uses techniques to realign the joints, muscles and fascia to alleviate that somatic dysfunctionBenefits:
- OMT treatment tends to lend itself to two main patient populations. People with back, neck or joint pain can benefit greatly from OMT to improve their pain and functionality.
- OMT has been demonstrated to improve immune function and aid in recovery from things like viral illnesses
